Regionwide distribution of transportation management information is a key function at the core of a transportation agency's ability to generate benefits from ITS. Agencies are deploying projects across the country with use of C2F communications protocols.
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)
FDOT developed its own DMS specifications on the basis of NTCIP protocol standards, including Global Object Definitions, PMPP, and SNMP, over the last five years. It used these specifications to develop a DMS Pre-Qualification Program to help manufacturers interested in biding on FDOT projects make competent bids, test for compliance to FDOT specifications, and ensure a suitable degree of interoperability between all DMS systems in the state for future expansion and integration. Manufacturers that pass the pre-qualification test and meet Florida-specific management information bases (MIBs) are listed on an official FDOT DMS manufacturer qualification list. FDOT reports that this program has resulted in less sign failures and better compliance. More information about the FDOT DMS project can be found at http://potentia.eng.fsu.edu/terl/areas_of_work_ntcip_testing.htm.
Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT)
MnDOT deployed an ESS using center-to-field communication profile standards in 2000. The ITS Standards Test Team then conducted independent testing of the standards. The testing examined the functional use of the national ITS architecture interface between four selected ESSs (at roadside) and the MnDOT headquarters building in St. Paul (central). The system uses SNMP and TFTP protocols, which have facilitated upgrades of portions of their system over the years.
