Probe Surveillance

Description
This field-to-vehicle application area covers the interface between roadside equipment and vehicles that are equipped with a short range communications device. The probe data collected by the field equipment may include link travel times, average speeds, road conditions, environmental conditions, surface weather information, and any other data that can be measured and communicated by passing vehicles. The collected probe information could be sent to a center for processing and distribution.

National ITS Architecture Interface
This application area includes the dedicated short range communications interface between the Vehicle Subsystem (VS) and the Roadway Subsystem (RS) and is used to determine environmental and traffic conditions based on probe information collected from passing vehicles. In a basic implementation, the probe data could be limited to time stamped unique identifiers that can be used to measure a vehicle’s progress through the network. In more advanced implementations, the vehicle may report current position, speed, and heading and snapshots of recent events including starts and stops, speed changes, and other information that can be used to estimate traffic conditions. Additionally, data from vehicle safety systems (e.g., measured air temperature, exterior light status, wiper status, traction control status, anti-lock brake status) can be transmitted by the VS to the RS and used to estimate environmental conditions.

To determine which specific standards are applicable for a deployment you will need to determine which architecture flows will be needed for the Probe Surveillance piece of your deployment.
