Overview

Forward collision warning (FCW) systems are designed to alert drivers to potential collision situations and to help them avoid striking the rear of moving or stationary vehicles ahead. This information report describes elements for a FCW-operator interface, as well as requirements for and methods for testing systems capable of warning drivers of rear-end collisions

What are these standards for?

SAE J2400 - Human Factors in Forward Collision Warning Systems: Operating Characteristics and User Interface Requirements is an "information report", not a recommended practice or standard. It is intended to be used as a starting point or reference for designers of forward collision warning systems. This information report applies to original equipment and aftermarket FCW systems for passenger vehicles including cars, light trucks, and vans. This report does not apply to heavy trucks. Furthermore, this document does not address integration issues associated with adaptive cruise control (ACC), and consequently, aspects of the document could be inappropriate for an ACC system integrated with a FCW system.

Who uses them?

This information report can be used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers of FCW systems for passenger cars and trucks.

How are they used?

Those who design and develop FCW systems can use this report as guidance on how drivers interact with such systems. It also provides a framework for testing FCW systems.

Scope

This information report, SAE J2400 - Human Factors in Forward Collision Warning Systems: Operating Characteristics and User Interface Requirements, applies to original equipment and after-market FCW systems for passenger vehicles including cars, light trucks, and vans; it does not, however, apply to heavy trucks. This document also does not address integration issues associated with adaptive cruise control (ACC); consequently, aspects of the document could be inappropriate for an ACC system integrated with a FCW system.
